Stockport Council becomes the 56th council to adopt the MND Charter

This week, Stockport Council signed a declaration of support for the MND Charter at their monthly full council meeting. Councillor Tom McGee sought the council’s consent to agree the Charter as a cabinet member, and the declaration of support for the MND Charter has been signed and will be framed and on display in Stockport Town Hall.

The success of this Charter adoption is due to the campaigning work undertaken by Greg Broadhurst, MND Association Campaigns Contact volunteer for the Manchester and District area. Greg has achieved an incredible amount of awareness and support for our MND Charter in his area from local decision makers, and has previously secured Charter adoptions from Oldham, Trafford, Tameside and Rochdale Councils.

Greg Broadhurst said:

“I’m very pleased to secure my hometown, Stockport, as the fifth council to show support for the MND Charter in Greater Manchester. Having been born and bred in the town, and an active campaigner for people with MND, it gives me great delight to see this happen In October 2017, after having the town hall lit in Orange and Blue as an initial show of support by the Council in June 2017.

Many thanks to all at Stockport, from the council leader Alex Ganotis, to Cabinet member Tom McGee and also Andrew Gwynne MP, who helped introduce me to Alex and set the ball rolling. As a proud son of my hometown, Stockport, I’m extremely pleased the Council have now agreed to back the MND Charter.”

Councillor Alex Ganotis, Leader of Stockport Council, said:

“Stockport Council has adopted the MND Charter, and by doing so, the Council is helping to promote it to raise awareness and campaign to improve services and the quality of life for people with motor neurone disease and their carers in our community.”
