Friendship Group For Carers Scoops Funding Boost

A social group for carers is firing on all cylinders after scooping sponsorship from a Harrogate-based gas company.

The Friendship Group at Carers’ Resource is celebrating after receiving a generous £2,000 from commercial gas suppliers CNG – to help mark the 20-year anniversary celebrations of the carers’ organisation.

The monthly get-together gives unpaid carers - people who look after a relative, friend or loved one who is frail, or has a disability or illness - the opportunity to relax and socialise, try different activities and take a break from their caring role.

At a recent session they had a go at ‘bookfolding’ and made some eye-catching hedgehogs from old novels and books under the guidance and expertise of a group member.

Activities have included talks by guest speakers, day trips and singing.

Anne Wells, Fundraising Co-ordinator at Carers’ Resource, in North Park Road, said:

“We are extremely grateful for this generous donation and is a welcome boost during our celebratory year.

“It will help us to keep this important and popular group going, to plan ahead with activities.

“The Friendship Group means so much to us and the carers – it’s an opportunity for them to unwind and offload with like-minded people, and for them to get a real break from it all.

“Caring can be a very demanding and overwhelming role, and anything which can help carers to recharge their batteries is always welcomed. We are delighted that CNG has recognised the value of this group and what it means to carers.”

Cindy Toulson, a regular at the group said:

“It’s a Friendship Group – it does what it says on the tin, and I've made some lovely, good friends through this group.”

Jacqui Hall, Managing Director at CNG, said:

“We are very proud to sponsor the Friendship Group at Carers’ Resource and we hope this will help it to continue to thrive and attract new members.

“We appreciate the role of carers within the community and, as caring can happen to anyone at any time; it’s reassuring to know that support is available on our doorstep through Carers’ Resource and the range of services it provides.”

The Friendship Group meets at the Carers’ Resource office, North Park Road, Harrogate on the last Thursday of the month, 2pm to 4pm, for activities and refreshments, speakers and occasional trips.
