Charity Gets Eventful To Engage Older Community

From fabric weaving, fitness and films to literature, lunches and leisure – a Sheffield charity has devised an activity-packed events list to engage with the city’s older community.

Age UK Sheffield has teamed up with Yorkshire Artspace to offer members of its Club a variety of taster craft workshops with talented regional artists specialising in fabric weaving, painting and bespoke glass jewellery.

Steve Wylie, Age UK Sheffield Club Manager, said:

“Members told us they would like to see more art and craft in the events calendar so we will have one event a month between July and September, enhancing our list of regular activities.

“The Club’s free and discounted events are always based on members’ suggestions and this is another example of us developing our offering to suit the needs and tastes of the city’s older community.”

Other events in The Club calendar include a Lunch and Leisure event where older people can meet, eat and chat, a Swimming and Fitness Club and literature and history groups.

The Memory Lane film event at The Showroom cinema is held the second Monday of every month and involves a private screening of a classic film followed by a two-course lunch. The 1966 British drama ‘Born Free’ will be shown in July, American crime film starring Marlon Brando ‘On The Waterfront’ in August and in September ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’, one of the box office hits of 1958 and based on the Tennessee Williams play.

A day trip to Wentworth Garden Centre is also planned next month.

 Said Steve:

“Getting out in the community, meeting new people, staying active and learning new skills are all ways Sheffield’s older people can tackle issues associated with later life such as loneliness and social exclusion.”

Membership of The Club costs £25 a year and is for anyone aged 50 and over. As well as access to the calendar of free and discounted events, membership includes an hour of one-to-one guidance on using the internet, the loan of a laptop, tablet or iPad, socialising opportunities with other members and advice on getting and staying active.
