Action on Elder Abuse
Welcome to our website
Who we are:
Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) works to protect, and prevent the abuse
of, vulnerable older adults. We were the first charity to address
these problems and are the only charity in the UK and in Ireland working
exclusively on the issue today. Consequently,
when you provide support to us, or make a donation, you can be sure that it will be
used exclusively on issues relating to elder abuse and nothing else.
Our work is fundamental to challenging elder abuse in the UK
and we constantly need financial support to continue our
activities. Although we are as effective as many of the bigger
charities, we receive only a fraction of their income. Help us
continue to make a difference.
Please donate by calling 0208 765 7000 or simply by sending
an e-mail to:
getinvolved@elderabuse.org.uk.

for further options on how you can help us.
No other charity has the expertise, knowledge or long term track record
on this issue. Our staff have an understanding of the dynamics of
abuse as it applies to older people than cannot be found
elsewhere. When you support us you make a real difference to the
lives of abused people.

Prevalence Study of
elder abuse in the community.
In June 2007 the Department of
Health, in conjunction with the Comic Relief charity, published a
prevalence study into the extent of elder abuse within our
communities. Although the research has significant flaws (in our
view) it still provided useful information on the nature of elder
abuse.

Training
We have a range of training packages suitable for Third
sector and statutory agencies, and for care providers who want to equip
their staff to recognise and respond to abuse. These are different
from 'adult protection' training! Click here

Legislation to protect Older
People and other Adults at risk of abuse...
Protection for adults at risk
of abuse in England or Wales is covered
by documents called
No
Secrets
(England) and In Safe Hands (Wales). These were issued as guidance in 2000, under section 7 of
the Local Authority Social Services Act 1970.
Section 7 guidance does not carry the same status as
legislation; instead local authorities have their compliance assessed as
part of a statutory inspection process.
With ‘good reason’ a local authority can ignore such
guidance. As a consequence we are failing to adequately protect older people
and other vulnerable adults.
The Government has challenged us all to justify why we need legislation, and
we are throwing the challenge back. The Government must justify why it
is not prepared to lead on proposing legislation.
Right now we have laws to protect our animals but not our old
people. Can this be right?

Helplines
A primary service that operates across England, Ireland, Scotland and
Wales is our helpline, which is open every weekday, from 9.00 am to
5.00 pm.
Although it cannot provide legal advice, it can
provide information on the nature of elder abuse and indicate what action might be taken in response to abuse or to prevent
it. In the UK the freephone number is 0808 808 8141 while in the Republic of
Ireland it is 1800 940 010. more...

A New Domiciliary Care Training Pack - The HomeFront.
This NEW
training pack covers the difficult issue of abuse from the perspective
of a domiciliary care worker. Written in a format that allows it
to be used in small patch-type meetings, or one hour bursts, it provides real-life
scenarios of abuse and gives invaluable guidance on how to tackle it.
It is appropriate for settings in all four nations of the UK, the
Republic of Ireland and beyond. Click

Good Practice database
The
Safeguarding Adults Good Practice Project is funded by Comic
Relief and managed jointly by AEA and
the Practitioners Alliance for Vulnerable Adults. The
project is aimed at practitioners and
others with a stake in Safeguarding adults. The project provides practical methods of
identifying and disseminating good practice, from local authorities,
service providers, advocates, service users etc. The
database enables people to browse examples of actions that are working well, and use the information to make
changes and improve services and outcomes for vulnerable adults.
