Stairlift
The word “Stairlift” refers to the actual stairlift unit and stairlift track. Stairlifts are also known as stair lifts, stair-lifts, chair lifts, stair gliders and chairlift.
There are two main parts to a stairlift; 1. the actual stairlift unit which the user would sit on, and 2. the stairlift track which enables the stairlift unit to move up and down the stairs. The majority of modern day stairlifts are powered by highly durable batteries contained within the lower part of the stairlift unit just below the seat.
The stairlift unit contains the drive to move the stairlift up and down the staircase. This is done by an internal motor which is powered by the batteries.
The stairlift track is mounted to the treads of the stairs to allow the stairlift unit to run up and down the staircase. The stairlift track usually starts at the bottom of the stairs and ends at very top step. The stairlift track also contains the charge for the batteries in the stairlift unit, so once the stairlift has stopped, it’s automatically on charge.
There are many different types of stairlifts available but essentially they all do the same thing. Some makes are better than others but the majority of stairlifts either curved or straight should offer very similar features as standard.
A stairlift is a very adaptable product and can be tailor made to match the requirements of the user and suit the staircase they are installed on.

Stairlift Charging Points & Continuous Charging System
We get a few questions regarding the difference between stairlift charging points and stairlift continuous charging systems. So to clear this one up, here’s a brief description on the two…
The majority of modern day stairlifts are D/C battery powered. The stairlift track they run on comes fitted with either a continuous charging system or charging points.
A charging point is where the stairlift is left to charge its batteries after use. Usually they are conveniently located at the top and bottom of the stairlift track so that when you come to the end of your journey the stairlift is automatically on charge. Charging points can be located anywhere along the stairlift track and are sometimes relocated when a hinge track system is in place. If the stairlift does not park on to its charging point correctly, the batteries will not be charged.
Continuous charging systems are a little different. The whole of the stairlift track contains the charge required for the batteries, meaning the stairlift can be left anywhere along the track and the stairlift will still be on charge.

Need a Stairlift Urgently?
We know how important it is that when purchasing a stairlift you get it as soon as possible. At Unicorn Stairlifts we always maintain high levels of current stock at our premises rather than ordering directly from the manufacture once a customers order is received.
We do this so that when we receive a stairlift order, we are able to considerably reduce the time it takes from the order date to the actual installation date, in turn saving valuable time to those customers that need a stairlift urgently.
Because of this we are able to install straight stairlifts quickly and efficiently, in most cases within 2 -3 working days from site survey.
On Tuesday this week (20/07/10), we had a customer who contacted us requiring a stairlift urgently. On Wednesday a full site survey was completed. Thursday morning, the Stannah 420 stairlift was installed to the delight of the customer.
