Sometimes the idea of having a stairlift installed in your home can be a little hard to imagine. So in acknowledgement to this and to also give you an idea of our quality of workmanship, here is a selection of a few curved stairlift installations that we have recently supplied and installed:

These are examples of curved stairlift installations only.

The curved stairlift was installed on the internal side (right hand side looking up the stairs) due to the door on the external side. The bespoke curved stairlift track features a 180° wrap start so that it parks neatly out of the way, the track then follows the line of the stairs with a 90° internal bend at the quarter landing section followed by a straight section that stops level with landing enabling the stairlift to swivel on to the landing safely.

Curved stairlift installation in Barnard Castle, Teesdale

Example of: 180° configuration | right, internal sided | 1 x intermediate square landing

This curved staircase features a straight section of 7 steps followed by an intermediate landing, which turns 180° with 6 remaining steps on to the 1st floor. There is sufficient room at the bottom either side of the stairs for the stairlift to park freely. At the top of the stairs (looking up) there is a door on the left side with no obstructions to the right.

Overall this particular staircase is a typical 180° curved configuration. The only obstruction on the stairs is the radiator located on the intermediate landing. The radiator would potentially need to be removed depending on the installation side and leg space.

After a full technical survey and discussions with the customer, it was decided that the curved stairlift would be installed on to the internal side of the staircase with a 180° internal bend on the intermediate landing continuing up the remaining 6 steps and finishing with a manual swivel seat for easy access on to the 1st floor. The decision to install the stairlift on the internal side was partly influenced by the radiator on the external side. Because there was sufficient leg space it meant that the radiator could still be kept without causing an issue (The depth of the intermediate landing, depth of the stairlift and the users leg measurement are calculated to determine this). For example, if the stairlift had of been installed on the external side then the radiator would need removing.

Example of: 180° configuration | left, external sided | 1 x intermediate square landing | Power hinge track

The staircase features a straight section of 7 steps from the ground floor to a intermediate landing and then turns 180° with another 6 remaining steps on to the 1st floor. Bottom of the staircase is a hall area with a door just off to the left (looking up) at 90°, to the right there is a small area under the stairs. Top of the stairs there is an open landing. The staircase is of a 180° configuration overall.

After survey and discussions with the customer, it was decided that the curved stairlift would be installed on to the left side of the staircase with a 180° external track featuring a powered hinge (could not start with a 90° bend because of the door to the left) at the bottom and finishing with a manual swivel seat for easy access on to the 1st floor. The decision to install the stairlift on the external side as opposed to the internal side was  influenced by the fact that the space under the stairs was used for access to the cupboard.

Curved stairlift installation in Selby, North Yorkshire

Example of: 90° configuration | left, external sided | 1 x intermediate square landing

The curved staircase in this particular example features a straight section of 11 steps with a small square landing, which turns 90° with 2 remaining steps on to the 1st floor. There is sufficient room at the bottom of the stairs for the stairlift to park freely (space of around 23″ is required).  At the top of the stairs there is a door to the bathroom – which the customer was worried that having a stairlift installed would potentially block off access. This is a common concern but not a problem as the stairlift comes with a swivel seat as standard so that when it reaches the top step, the seat can be rotated to face the 1st floor. This stops the stairlift and track ending in front of the door and also offers safe alighting.

Overall this particular staircase is a typical 90° curved configuration with no issues and is generally the most common curved staircase shape we come across.

After a full technical survey and discussions with the customer, it was decided that the curved stairlift would be fitted to the external wall side (this is the most convenient side for the installation of a curved stairlift) with a 90° bend on to the square landing continuing up the remaining 2 steps and finishing with a manual swivel seat for easy access on to the 1st floor.

Curved Stairlift Installation in Ripon, North Yorkshire

Example of: 90° configuration | left, external sided | bottom section of fan shaped steps | 90° start

The curved staircase in this particular example features a straight section of 8 steps with a 90° fan shaped turn at the bottom. There is no continuous wall at the bottom for the stairlift to park freely without causing an obstruction so it would require an hinge track system if installed on the external side (left side looking up) or alternatively could finish with a 90° curve into the hall depending on the customers preference.

Before:

After a full technical survey and discussions with the customer, it was decided that the curved stairlift would be fitted to the external wall (left hand side) and  finish with a 90° bend in to the hall instead of a hinge track system for convenience and the fact there was sufficient room in the hall. It could not be installed on right hand side (internal side) as there is a cupboard under the stairs which is used regularly.

At the top of the stairs, the track would stop level with the final step with a swivel seat to access the landing – this stops the stairlift from causing an obstruction on the landing but also enables the customer to get off safely.

Curved Stairlift Installation in Leeds, West Yorkshire

Example of: 90° configuration | left, external sided | 1 x bottom intermediate square landing

The curved staircase in this example features 3 steps, a small square intermediate landing that turns at 90° followed by 10 straight steps up to the landing (like a “L” shape staircase configuration).  There is a radiator at the top of the staircase on the external wall side and a door on the internal side. The front door at the bottom (as pictured) wasn’t a problem as there was sufficient space for the stairlift to park freely between the door and the edge of the first step - a minimum space of 23″ is required - 26" was available in this example.

Before:

Below are pictures taken before the stairlift was installed (you can click each picture to enlarge)….

After a full technical survey and discussions with the customer, it was decided that the curved stairlift would be fitted to the external wall side (the most common side for installation) with a 90° curved staircase track, which at the top, would stop level with the final step with a swivel seat to access the landing – this stops the stairlift from causing an obstruction to the landing but also enables the customer to get off safely and the radiator can still be kept.

The curved stairlift used in our Leeds stairlift installation is a fully reconditioned Bison 80 curved stairlift. The stairlift was installed 1 day after survey as it was required urgently.

Curved Stairlift Installation in Durham, County Durham

Example of: 180° configuration | right, external sided | 2 x intermediate square landings | 180° wrap round start

This staircase features 3 steps up to a small square intermediate landing that turns at 90° followed by another 6 straight steps to another small square intermediate landing that turns again 90° and is followed by another 4 straight steps to the 1st floor. The staircase is fairly complicated due to the fact it’s on 3 levels, the configuration is 180° to reach the 1st floor (horse shoe shape) and the bottom features a door one side and the other side has no continuous wall for the stairlift to park freely without causing an obstruction. Also there is a door on the external side at the top.

Before:

Below are pictures taken before the stairlift was installed (you can click each picture to enlarge)….

After a full technical survey and discussions with the customers, it was decided that the stairlift would be fitted to the external wall side and begin with a 180° start which would wrap around the bottom internal wall allowing for the stairlift to park in the free space in the hall. At the top, the stairlift would stop level with the final step with a swivel seat to access the landing – this stops the stairlift from causing an obstruction to the doorway but also enables the customer to get off safely.

After:

And here is the final product (you can click each picture to enlarge)….

The curved stairlift used in our Durham stairlift installation is a fully reconditioned Bison 80 curved stairlift . The stairlift was installed 5 workings day's after survey.
